ABOUT US

Philosophy and Diversity

COMMITTED TO YOU

in every respect

Hotel Kolping Linz belongs to the Kolping Society, a charitable Christian association based on Catholic social doctrine. The philosophy of its founder, Adolph Kolping, is the basis for all Kolping Houses worldwide.

Key Responsibilities of the Kolping Society in Linz:
  • Management of two dormitories for young people
  • Youth work/Personal development
  • Social commitment and development projects

We consider the management of dormitories for young people to be our main objective. In order to fulfill these social functions in a correspondingly high quality, we operate the following business enterprises:

The resulting revenue provides the necessary financial basis for our dormitories for a total of 300 young people at two locations. The dorm in Beethovenstraße houses youth under 18 years of age, while those over 18 live in our dormitory in Gesellenhausstraße.

We try to tailor our pedagogical support to our clients’ needs and take seriously the requests, worries, and anxieties of those entrusted to us. Living together in our dorms is organized in a way that a sense of community is promoted and contributions to social action can develop.

History of the Kolping Association in Linz

Der Gründer Adolph Kolping

Our founder, Adolph Kolping (Dec. 8, 1813 – Dec. 4, 1865) was a trained shoemaker who studied theology and became a priest. In his work as a priest he got to know the impoverishment of young craft journeymen who were displaced during the Industrial Revolution.

In 1849 Kolping founded the first Catholic Journeymen’s Association in Cologne. His main concern was the accommodation and further training of young people in Kolping houses during their vocational education.

From Cologne, the Kolping idea spread throughout the whole of Germany within four years.

In 1852 the Journeymen’s Association of Linz was constituted. One year later, on February 2, 1853, Praeses Pamesberger acquired the building in Gesellenhausstraße, which was then adapted into a journeymen’s dormitory. This was worldwide the first Kolping House, owned by the Kolping Association.

Until 1940 the target groups of the association’s activities – apprentices and journeymen – basically remained the same. After World War II many things changed for the Kolping Association.

Kolping Linz reacted to the new, current challenges by establishing economic enterprises, and in doing so, ensured its long-term charitable tasks. These continue to act as the financial foundation for its charitable status.

Today there are Kolping Houses in 64 countries on 5 continents.
